Name: Andinia hirtzii
Etymology: The genus name Andinia refers to the Andes, the center of distribution for this group of small Pleurothallidinae orchids. The specific epithet hirtzii is a patronymic.
Origin/Distribution: Ecuador.
Location/Habitat: The species grows epiphytically in cool, very moist montane to cloud forest habitats in the Andes. We recommend partial shade to bright, diffused light, very high humidity, and continuous air movement. Cool conditions of approximately 10–20 °C during the day and 6–14 °C at night are favorable. Prolonged heat and complete drying out should be avoided.
Description and Notes: Andinia hirtzii is a miniature botanical orchid from the Pleurothallidinae group, with a compact growth habit and small, intricately detailed flowers. We prefer to cultivate it mounted or in a very fine, airy, and slightly moisture-retaining substrate. We use as soft water as possible and keep the roots evenly moist. Cool nights and good air movement at high humidity are particularly important.
