Synonym / taxonomic note: Acineta cryptodonta is treated as the older name in modern taxonomic literature; Acineta beyrodtiana was historically regarded as a distinct species.
Etymology: The species was named in honor of the German orchid enthusiast Otto Beyrodt.
First description: Rudolf Schlechter described Acineta beyrodtiana in 1917. However, the species’ taxonomic history is complex; later treatments place it under Acineta cryptodonta.
Origin: Historically associated with Colombia; the original material of the plant described by Schlechter is not securely documented.
Description & notes: A striking, robust-growing Stanhopeinae with large, pleated leaves and pendent inflorescences. The flowers are relatively large and appear in profusion on long, drooping inflorescences. Like other Acineta species, it is particularly well suited to baskets, where the inflorescences can grow freely downward. Grow it in warm to cool conditions, in bright shade and humid air; water regularly during active growth and ensure good drainage and air movement.
