Description

Masdevallia ingridiana

Name: Masdevallia ingridiana Luer & J.Portilla

Etymology: The genus name Masdevallia honors José Masdevall, a Spanish physician and botanist. The epithet ingridiana honors Ingrid Portilla, orchid grower at Portilla Orchids.

First description: The species was described in 2000 by Carlyle A. Luer and José Portilla.

Origin / Habitat: Southern Ecuador, at approximately 1,000 m. It grows epiphytically in moist montane forests.

Description & cultivation: A small Masdevallia with an upright stem and a single, thick, leathery leaf. The slender inflorescence bears several small flowers sequentially. The flowers are approximately 3 cm in size. We grow it in bright to partial shade, with high humidity and good air circulation. We cultivate it in warm conditions, at approximately 16–22°C.
