Name: Restrepia ephippium Luer & Hirtz
Etymology: The genus Restrepia commemorates José Restrepo, a promoter of the natural sciences in Colombia. The Greek-Latin specific epithet ephippium means “saddle” and refers to the shape of the flowers.
Origin/Distribution: Ecuador.
Location/Habitat: An epiphyte from the humid forests of northwestern Ecuador at mid elevations. Cool to intermediate temperatures of about 14–23 °C, high humidity, gentle air movement, and shade to moderately bright light are suitable.
Description and Notes: Restrepia ephippium is a compact miniature orchid that can produce several flowers sequentially from one growth; older growths may also flower again. We recommend mounting it or growing it in a small pot with a fine, airy, moisture-retentive medium. Keep it evenly moist, water with soft water, and never allow it to dry out completely.
