Description

Restrepia elegans 'Red'

Name: Restrepia elegans ‘Red’

Etymology: The genus name Restrepia honors José Restrepo; elegans means “elegant.”

Origin/Distribution: Restrepia elegans is known from northern and western South America.

Growing Conditions/Habitat: We grow ‘Red’ in cool to intermediate conditions at around 13–24 °C, with high humidity, bright filtered light, and continuous gentle air movement. We keep the fine, airy substrate consistently slightly moist.

Description and Notes: ‘Red’ is a richly colored selection of this compact Restrepia. The small plants can flower repeatedly on well-established growths. Because of their fine roots, we avoid both allowing them to dry out completely and keeping the substrate permanently waterlogged.
