Name: Porroglossum portillae Luer & Andreetta
Etymology: The genus name Porroglossum refers to the distinctive lip structure; portillae is a specific epithet named in honor of the Portilla family.
First described: 1980 by Carlyle A. Luer and Calaway H. Andreetta.
Origin/Distribution: The species is native to Ecuador.
Location/Habitat: We grow Porroglossum portillae coolly at approximately 11–20 °C, with very high humidity, shade to bright filtered light, and continuous gentle air movement. The fine, airy substrate remains evenly moist.
Description and Notes: This miniature orchid develops small leathery leaves and sequentially blooming flowers on slender inflorescences. The movable lip mechanism is a particularly interesting feature of the genus. We avoid allowing it to dry out completely.
