Description

Porroglossum porphyreum

Name: Porroglossum porphyreum G.Merino, A.Doucette & Pupulin

Etymology: The genus name Porroglossum refers to the characteristic tongue-shaped lip. The epithet porphyreum means "purple" or "violet".

First description: The species was described in 2010 by G. Merino, A. Doucette and F. Pupulin.

Origin / Habitat: Ecuador, in the Andes of Morona-Santiago in premontane forests. It grows as a shade-loving epiphyte on mossy branches at about 1600 m.

Description & Notes: Very small, compactly growing Porroglossum with single flowers appearing successively on fine inflorescences. We cultivate it in shade to bright indirect light, with high humidity and good air movement. We keep the substrate evenly moist and let it dry out only slightly between waterings. We keep it cool, at about 12–20 °C.
