Name: Polypodium bombycinum
Etymology: The genus name Polypodium derives from Greek and roughly means “many-footed,” an allusion to the branched rhizome. The species epithet bombycinum means “silky” or “silk-like.”
Location/Habitat: For this tropical fern, we recommend bright, filtered light to partial shade, high humidity, and intermediate to warm temperatures.
Description and Notes: Polypodium bombycinum is a decorative fern with a creeping rhizome and attractive fronds. The rhizome should not be buried deeply. We use a loose, humus-rich, very airy substrate that stays evenly and slightly moist. We avoid waterlogging and letting it dry out completely for extended periods. Good air circulation combined with high humidity and temperatures of around 18–28 °C promotes healthy growth.
