Description

Podangis dactyloceras

Name: Podangis dactyloceras (Rchb.f.) Schltr.

Synonyms: Listrostachys dactyloceras, Angraecum dactyloceras, Angorkis dactyloceras.

Etymology: The genus name Podangis derives from Greek and refers to the characteristic shape of the flowers. dactyloceras roughly means “finger horn” and alludes to the long, finger-like curved spur.

First description: Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach described the species in 1865 as Listrostachys dactyloceras; Rudolf Schlechter transferred it to Podangis in 1918.

Origin / Habitat: Tropical West Africa to Angola and Tanzania, including Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Uganda. It grows epiphytically, occasionally lithophytically, in evergreen rainforests near rivers and waterfalls at around 750–1950 m.

Description & Notes: A small, compact-growing orchid with fleshy leaves arranged in a fan and short inflorescences. The translucent white flowers are about 2 × 7 mm and have a long, curved spur. In our collection, it grows in bright to partially shaded conditions, with high humidity and good air circulation. We grow it warm, at around 18–28 °C, and let the substrate dry slightly between waterings.
