Name: Pleurothallis Walnut Valley
Etymology: Registered name based on its origin ("Walnut Valley Orchids").
First description: 2015 B.Rinke. This is a primary hybrid of Pleurothallis phymatodea × Pleurothallis teaguei.
Description & Notes:
Pleurothallis Walnut Valley is an impressive, vigorous hybrid with large, glossy, leathery leaves. The flowers appear in dense clusters directly at the base of the leaf stalk. They are fleshy, deep purple-black in color with a velvety texture, and often exhibit a fine, bluish shimmer. The flowers usually grow in groups and are very long-lasting.
In cultivation, this orchid requires an airy substrate (fine bark or mounted on cork/tree fern) that provides good drainage, as the roots are sensitive to waterlogging. Constant high humidity (70–90%) and a shaded to semi-shaded location are important for optimal development. A slight drop in temperature at night supports flower formation and the general well-being of the plant.
Location/Cultivation conditions: Cool to intermediate at approximately 12–23 °C, shaded to moderately bright, with high humidity and good air circulation. Use a fine, airy substrate and keep evenly moist.
