Name: Phragmipedium Saint Ouen
Parents: Phragmipedium besseae × Phragmipedium schlimii
Registration: Registered in the RHS International Orchid Register on November 25, 1996, by the Eric Young Orchid Foundation, which is also listed as the breeder.
Etymology: The genus name Phragmipedium derives from the Greek “phragma,” meaning partition, and “pedilon,” meaning slipper, and refers to the flower’s characteristic slipper-shaped pouch.
Location/Growing conditions: We recommend a bright to partially shaded location without strong midday sun, high humidity, and steady, gentle air movement. A free-draining yet moisture-retentive potting mix must never be allowed to dry out completely. Intermediate temperatures of around 16–25 °C are suitable; prolonged high temperatures should be avoided.
Description and notes: This compact hybrid combines the intense coloration of Phragmipedium besseae with the delicate, well-balanced flower form of Phragmipedium schlimii. The flowers are usually pink to red, with a clearly defined pouch; seedlings may vary in color, pattern, and form. Consistently moist roots and regular light fertilization during growth promote vigorous development.
