Name: Phragmipedium Robert-Jan Quené
Etymology:
The grex name Robert-Jan Quené honors orchid grower Robert-Jan Quené, who was involved in creating this hybrid.
First description:
Phragmipedium Robert-Jan Quené was registered in 2013 as a hybrid of Phragmipedium besseae × Phragmipedium Fritz Schomburg. Fritz Schomburg itself is a hybrid with Phragmipedium kovachii as one of its ancestors.
Origin / distribution:
This is a cultivated hybrid and therefore has no natural distribution range.
Location / habitat:
The parent species come from humid mountainous regions of South America. We therefore grow this hybrid in high humidity, with good air circulation and consistently adequate moisture around the roots.
Description & notes:
Phragmipedium Robert-Jan Quené produces vigorous plants with long, narrow leaves and upright flower spikes. The large flowers are predominantly pink to reddish in color. Well-established plants may produce several flowers in succession on a single spike.
The flowers can reach about 10–12 cm in width.
We grow it at cool to moderate temperatures, around 15–24 °C. We keep the substrate evenly moist and do not allow it to dry out completely. Bright, filtered light and good air circulation support vigorous growth.
