Name: Phragmipedium Little Duck
Etymology: Phragmipedium = partitioned slipper (Greek phragma = partition, pedilon = slipper — referring to the partition in the ovary and the slipper-shaped lip); Little Duck = little duck.
First description: Artificially created hybrid (Phragmipedium Rio Mira × Phragmipedium manzurii), registered by Ecuagenera with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) in 2024.
Description & Notes: Phragmipedium Little Duck is a compact, elegantly growing slipper orchid hybrid. Influenced by Phragmipedium manzurii and Phragmipedium Rio Mira, it is distinguished by delicate, often pale pink, yellow-green to slightly cream-colored flowers that appear sequentially (successively) on an upright inflorescence. The leaves are arranged in two rows, strap-shaped, and deep green.
This hybrid requires intermediate to warm conditions and a bright location without direct, scorching midday sun. The substrate (for example, a fine pine bark mix with pumice, sphagnum moss, or a purely mineral medium) should be kept consistently moist and never allowed to dry out completely. Watering with low-calcium water (rainwater or reverse-osmosis water), along with good air circulation, promotes healthy growth and root development.
