Name: Phragmipedium Gualaceo
Parents: Phragmipedium × roethianum × Phragmipedium kovachii
Registration: Registered by Ecuagenera in the RHS International Orchid Register in 2023.
Etymology: The genus name Phragmipedium combines the Greek words “phragma,” meaning partition, and “pedilon,” meaning slipper. The grex name honors Gualaceo in Ecuador, Ecuagenera’s long-standing home.
Location/Growing conditions: We recommend bright, filtered light, high humidity, and good air circulation. A coarse, structurally stable medium must remain evenly moist. Intermediate conditions of approximately 16–26 °C with cooler nights support healthy growth; excessive heat and dry periods are unfavorable.
Description and notes: Phragmipedium Gualaceo combines the long-petaled form of Phragmipedium × roethianum with the large, vivid pink to purple flowers of Phragmipedium kovachii. The result can be impressive flowers with broader segments and distinctly elongated petals. Seedlings vary in size, color intensity, and petal length.
