Name: Phragmipedium Eric Young “xanthinum red”
Parents: Phragmipedium besseae × Phragmipedium longifolium
Registration: Registered in the RHS International Orchid Register on October 31, 1991, by the Eric Young Orchid Foundation, which is also listed as the breeder.
Etymology: The genus name Phragmipedium combines the Greek words “phragma,” meaning partition, and “pedilon,” meaning slipper. The grex name honors British orchid grower and benefactor Eric Young.
Growing conditions: We recommend bright, filtered light, high humidity, and good air circulation. Keep the airy potting mix evenly moist and do not let it dry out completely. Intermediate temperatures of around 16–26 °C, with cooler nights, are beneficial.
Description and notes: Phragmipedium Eric Young combines the intense flower color of Phragmipedium besseae with the vigorous growth and longer segments of Phragmipedium longifolium. The sales name “xanthinum red” identifies the color selection offered; flower color and form may vary from plant to plant. Regular light fertilization during the growing season supports continued growth.
