Description

Philodendron melanochrysum variegata

Name: Philodendron melanochrysum Linden & André ‘Variegata’

Etymology: melanochrysum combines the meanings “dark” and “golden,” referring to the dark, velvety leaves with golden-looking venation.

Origin: The species is native to Colombia; ‘Variegata’ is a variegated cultivated form.

Location/growing conditions: We grow the plant at around 18–27 °C, with high humidity, good air circulation, and bright, indirect light. A climbing support and coarse, airy aroid substrate encourage the development of large leaves.

Description and notes: The velvety, elongated leaves have the species’ characteristic dark green to almost black appearance, along with variable light variegation. We protect very light-colored leaf areas from intense direct sunlight.
