Name: Philodendron sphalerum Schott
Synonyms: Philodendron longipetiolatum Engl.
Etymology: The genus name Philodendron roughly means “tree lover” and refers to the climbing habit of many species.
First description: Philodendron sphalerum was described by Heinrich Wilhelm Schott in 1860.
Origin/Distribution: The species is found in tropical South America.
Location/Habitat: We grow it in warm conditions at around 19–29 °C, with high humidity and bright, indirect light. We keep the coarse, airy aroid mix evenly slightly moist.
Description and notes: This climbing species develops elongated to heart-shaped leaves on long petioles and vigorous stems. A sturdy support encourages its natural growth habit and the development of larger leaves. Good air circulation and a well-aerated root zone are especially important at high humidity.
