Description

Philodendron insigne 'Purple'

Name: Philodendron insigne Schott ‘Purple’

Etymology: insigne means "conspicuous" or "remarkable"; ‘Purple’ refers to the purplish hue of this cultivar.

First described: In 1856 by Heinrich Wilhelm Schott.

Origin/Distribution: The species is native to tropical South America.

Location/Habitat: We cultivate ‘Purple’ in warm conditions at approximately 20–29 °C, with high humidity, bright indirect light, and good air circulation. We keep the coarse, airy aroid substrate consistently slightly moist.

Description and notes: Philodendron insigne is a vigorous climbing philodendron with elongated, leathery leaves. The ‘Purple’ selection is cultivated for its darker to purplish hue. A climbing support encourages natural growth and larger leaves.
