Name: Philodendron asplundii Croat & M.L.Soares
Etymology: The specific epithet asplundii honors the Swedish botanist Erik Asplund, who collected extensively in South America.
First described: 2001 by Thomas B. Croat and M. L. Soares.
Origin/Distribution: Tropical western South America, including Ecuador and Peru, among others.
Location/Habitat: The species grows terrestrially to hemi-epiphytically in moist tropical and pre-montane forests. We recommend approximately 18–28 °C, high humidity, bright filtered light, and good air circulation.
Description and Notes: Philodendron asplundii is a vigorous climber with long-petioled, large, oblong-cordate leaves. A sturdy support helps the plant develop more mature leaf shapes. A coarse, very airy aroid substrate with good water retention is suitable. Keep evenly lightly moist, but allow the top layer to dry out slightly before watering again.
