Name: Papilisia Preeyanan Sanpote
Etymology: Papilisia = artificial hybrid genus (intergeneric cross) between Papilionanthe and Luisia; 'Preeyanan Sanpote' = named in honor of a Thai botanist/researcher.
First description: Registered in December 2024 with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) by A. Kongbangkerd. It is a primary hybrid of Papilionanthe teres × Luisia primulina.
Origin / Distribution: Cultivar (artificial cross). The parent species originate from the tropical regions of South and Southeast Asia (e.g., India, Thailand, Myanmar).
Location / Habitat: Cultivated. Based on its parent species, this hybrid requires a very bright, warm to hot microclimate with excellent air circulation. It tolerates very high light levels and greatly benefits from strong sunlight.
Description & Notes: Papilisia Preeyanan Sanpote is a fascinating new intergeneric orchid hybrid with a pronounced, vanda-like monopodial growth habit. The plant produces firm, pencil-shaped, terete leaves that strongly resemble those of its parent Papilionanthe teres. The inflorescence bears attractive, waxy flowers that harmoniously combine the graceful, open structure of Papilionanthe with the compact, often yellowish-green to cream-colored hues of Luisia primulina.
In cultivation, this cross proves to be very vigorous and sun-loving. Ideally, it should be grown hanging completely bare-root, in a wooden slatted basket, or mounted. During the warm summer months, it needs generous daily watering in a sunny position, after which the thick aerial roots must dry quickly to prevent root rot. High humidity year-round, regular applications of dilute fertilizer, and continuous warm air movement are key to healthy growth and abundant flowering.
