Name: Papilionanthe vandarum (Rchb.f.) Garay
Synonyms: Aerides vandarum Rchb.f.
Etymology: The genus name Papilionanthe refers to its butterfly-like flowers; vandarum roughly means “belonging to the Vandas.”
Origin/Distribution: From the Himalayas and northeastern India through Nepal and Bhutan to Myanmar and southern China.
Site/Habitat: We grow this epiphytic species in intermediate to warm conditions at around 16–28 °C, in very bright light, with high humidity and strong air movement. The roots are watered regularly and should be allowed to dry slightly between waterings.
Description and Notes: The species grows upright to pendulous and produces long, slender shoots with narrow, almost cylindrical leaves. The 10-cm hanging pot supports its open growth habit. Older shoots that have become too long can be cut back and re-rooted if aerial roots are present.
