Description

Paphiopedilum Prime Child

Name: Paphiopedilum Prime Child

Parents: Paphiopedilum primulinum × Paphiopedilum rothschildianum
Breeder: Armacost & Royston
RHS Registration: 1985
Description: Paphiopedilum Prime Child is a primary hybrid of the slipper orchid genus (Paphiopedilum), which combines the characteristics of the compact, sequentially blooming species Paphiopedilum primulinum with the stately dimensions and striking striping of Paphiopedilum rothschildianum. The plant exhibits a multi-growth, fan-shaped habit without pseudobulbs, featuring distichous, strap-shaped, medium to dark green leaves.

The inflorescence is upright and bears multiple flowers on one stem in succession and often simultaneously. The flowers are characterized by striking markings: the upper sepal (dorsal sepal) is usually cream-white to yellowish with dark brown to purple longitudinal stripes. The petals are narrow, slightly spreading to drooping, and patterned with dark spots or stripes. The slipper lip appears in shades of yellow, green, or pink, which can vary depending on the individual clone and the influence of the parent forms.

In cultivation, this hybrid is relatively adaptable due to the vigor of P. rothschildianum and the free-flowering nature of P. primulinum. It prefers a semi-shaded to bright location without direct midday sun. The substrate should be fine-textured, calcareous to neutral, and kept consistently slightly moist without becoming waterlogged.

Location/Cultural conditions: Intermediate to warm at approximately 17–27 °C, semi-shaded to moderately bright. Keep evenly slightly moist in fine bark and avoid waterlogging.
