Name: Paphiopedilum lowii (Lindl.) Stein
Synonyms: Cypripedium lowii Lindl.; Cordula lowiana (Lindl.) Rolfe
Etymology: The specific epithet lowii honors the British naturalist and colonial administrator Hugh Low.
Origin/Distribution: Malaysia and Indonesia, including Sumatra, Java, Borneo, and Sulawesi.
Location/Habitat: Terrestrial, lithophytic, or occasionally epiphytic in forests and humus-filled rock crevices, at about 200–1,700 m above sea level. Temperate to warm conditions of approximately 16–28 °C, bright filtered light, and good air movement are suitable.
Description and Notes: This multifloral slipper orchid produces sturdy, strap-shaped leaves and long, upright flower spikes that can bear several large flowers. The widely spread petals display shades of green, brown, and purple; their shape and markings vary depending on origin. We recommend an airy yet moisture-retentive substrate. Water evenly during growth, but avoid waterlogging around the crown and roots.
