Name: Oncidium Hilda Plumtree ‘Purple Wings’
Parents: Oncidium Tiger Butter × Oncidium Remembrance
Registration: Oncidium Hilda Plumtree was registered with the RHS in 1985. Unicorn is listed as the registrant and Rod McLellan Co. as the originator.
Etymology: The genus name Oncidium derives from the Greek word for “swelling” or “bump,” referring to the callus on the lip. ‘Purple Wings’ is the cultivar name of this selected form.
Location/Growing conditions: We recommend bright, filtered light, high humidity, and good air movement. The orchid substrate should be fine to medium-grained, airy, and evenly slightly moist. Cool-intermediate to intermediate temperatures of around 14–24 °C and a nighttime temperature drop are beneficial.
Description and notes: Oncidium Hilda Plumtree ‘Purple Wings’ produces pseudobulbs with elongated leaves and branched flower spikes. This selected form is distinguished by its striking flower coloring and contrasting markings. During active growth, we keep the plant regularly moist; once the pseudobulbs have matured, watering can be reduced somewhat without allowing the plant to dry out significantly.
