Description

Monstera lechleriana ‘variegata’

Name: Monstera lechleriana Schott
Etymology:
Monstera derives from the Latin word monstrum (“monster,” “marvel,” or “something extraordinary”) and refers to the striking, perforated leaves of many species in the genus. The specific epithet lechleriana honors German botanist and plant collector Willibald Lechler (1814–1856), whose extensive collections made a significant contribution to the study of South American flora.

First description:
The species was first scientifically described in 1860 by Heinrich Wilhelm Schott under the name Monstera lechleriana Schott and published in the work Prodromus Systematis Aroidearum.
Origin / Distribution:
Monstera lechleriana is native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. Its natural range extends from Panama through Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador to Peru and Bolivia, where it occurs in permanently humid forest ecosystems.
Location / Habitat:
The species grows as a hemiepiphytic climbing plant in ever-wet lowland and montane rainforests. Young plants initially develop on the forest floor and then climb tree trunks with the help of their aerial roots to reach brighter areas of the forest. Its natural habitat is characterized by high humidity, warm temperatures year-round, nutrient-rich soils, and filtered light beneath the dense canopy.
Description & Notes:
Monstera lechleriana is a perennial, evergreen climbing plant in the arum family (Araceae), admired for its vigorous growth and elegant, elongated leaves. While young plants have fully intact leaf blades, older specimens develop the characteristic oval fenestrations as they mature, regularly arranged along the midrib. Its glossy, deep green foliage and relatively short internodes give mature plants a particularly dense and harmonious appearance.

Like many members of the genus, Monstera lechleriana develops its mature leaf shape only when it can climb a suitable support. An airy, structurally stable aroid substrate with good drainage supports healthy root development, while consistent moisture without waterlogging creates optimal growing conditions. Bright, indirect light encourages the development of large leaves, whereas intense midday sun can damage them. Warm temperatures between 20 and 28 °C and higher humidity come closest to its natural conditions and promote vigorous growth. Due to its elegant appearance and comparatively limited availability, the species is especially prized by collectors of tropical aroids.
