Description

Mediocalcar pygmeum (5.5 cm pot)

Name: Mediocalcar pygmaeum Schltr.

Synonyms: Mediocalcar crassifolium J.J.Sm.; Mediocalcar sigmoideum Schltr.

Etymology: pygmaeum means “dwarfish” or “small” and refers to its compact growth habit.

Origin/Distribution: The species is native to New Guinea.

Location/Habitat: We grow Mediocalcar pygmaeum in cool to intermediate conditions at around 13–23 °C, with high to very high humidity, bright filtered light, and good, gentle air circulation. We keep the fine substrate evenly moist.

Description and Notes: This miniature orchid grows spreading, forming dense clumps of small shoots. Tiny, colorful flowers appear among the foliage. Its compact growth habit makes the species very well suited to humid display cases and terrariums.
