Description

Maxillaria schunkeana OP in vitro

Name: Maxillaria schunkeana M.A.Campacci & Kautsky

Synonyms: Brasiliorchis schunkeana (M.A.Campacci & Kautsky) R.B.Singer, S.Koehler & Carnevali; Bolbidium schunkeanum (M.A.Campacci & Kautsky) J.M.H.Shaw

Etymology: The specific epithet schunkeana honors the Brazilian orchid collector Vital Schunk.

Origin/Distribution: Brazil, especially Espírito Santo.

Habitat/Environment: Epiphytic in moist Atlantic montane forests. We recommend intermediate conditions, high humidity, good air circulation, and bright to partial shade, protected light. The roots should be kept evenly slightly moist but airy.

Description and Notes: Maxillaria schunkeana is a compact orchid known for its exceptionally dark flowers. The very deep dark red can appear almost black in normal light. Well-established plants can produce several flowers at the same time or successively.

In vitro culture: You will receive a flask with 4 young plants. The plants are usually already large enough to be deflashed. After opening, carefully remove the nutrient medium completely from the fine roots with lukewarm water and place the young plants in a fine, airy, and slightly moisture-retaining substrate. During the first few weeks, we recommend very high humidity, intermediate conditions, bright but protected light, and gentle air circulation. Keep evenly slightly moist and avoid complete drying out.
