Name: Maxillaria kautskyi
Etymology: The genus name Maxillaria is derived from the Latin maxilla for "jaw" and refers to structures of the flower. The specific epithet kautskyi honors the Brazilian orchid researcher and plant collector Roberto Anselmo Kautsky.
Origin/Distribution: Brazil.
Location/Habitat: Epiphytic orchid of humid tropical forests. We recommend bright, filtered light, high humidity, good air circulation, and warm to intermediate temperatures.
Description and Notes: Maxillaria kautskyi is a compact species with pseudobulbs and leathery leaves. The flowers appear singly from the area of the pseudobulbs and display the characteristic, three-dimensional floral shape of many Maxillaria species. We use an airy, well-draining orchid substrate and keep it consistently slightly moist during active growth. It may dry out slightly between waterings, but prolonged complete dryness should be avoided. Temperatures of about 18–28 °C are well-suited.
