Name: Masdevallia tubulosa Lindl.

Etymology: The genus name Masdevallia honors José Masdeval; tubulosa means “tubular” and refers to the shape of the flowers.

First described: In 1846 by John Lindley.

Origin/Distribution: From Venezuela through Colombia and Ecuador to Peru and Bolivia.

Location/Habitat: We grow this species in cool to intermediate conditions at around 10–21 °C, with high humidity, shade to bright filtered light, and excellent air circulation. We keep its fine root system consistently slightly moist.

Description and notes: This compact Masdevallia produces upright, slender growths and tubular-looking flowers. It is well suited to cool, humid growing conditions. We avoid prolonged periods of heat and allowing it to dry out completely.
