Name: Leptotes bicolor
Etymology: The genus name Leptotes refers to the slender, delicate growth. The specific epithet bicolor means "two-colored" and refers to the contrasting coloration of the flower.
Origin/Distribution: Southeastern South America, especially Brazil.
Location/Habitat: Epiphytic orchid from bright, well-ventilated locations. We recommend bright, filtered light, good air movement, and intermediate to warm temperatures of approximately 16–28 °C.
Description and Notes: Leptotes bicolor is a compact orchid with slender, fleshy, nearly cylindrical leaves. The elegant flowers feature light sepals and petals as well as a contrastingly colored lip. We prefer to cultivate this species mounted or in a very airy substrate and allow the roots to dry out slightly between waterings.
In-vitro culture: You will receive a flask with 4 young plants. The plants are generally already large enough to be deflasked. After opening, carefully remove the nutrient medium completely from the fine roots with lukewarm water and place the young plants in fine, very airy bark with a little sphagnum, or mount them carefully. For the first few weeks, we recommend high humidity, intermediate to warm conditions, and bright but protected light with good air movement. Initially, keep them evenly slightly moist; only allow them to dry out more once they are securely established.
