Name: Leptotes bicolor Lindl.
Synonyms: Leptotes serrulata Lindl.; Tetramicra bicolor (Lindl.) Benth. ex J.B.Rodr.
Etymology: The genus name Leptotes refers to its delicate growth habit. The specific epithet bicolor means “two-colored” and describes the contrast between the white flower segments and the purple lip.
First described: In 1833 by John Lindley.
Origin/Distribution: Southeastern and southern Brazil, as well as Paraguay.
Habitat: Epiphytic in gallery and coastal forests, often in bright to partially shaded locations. We recommend intermediate to warm conditions of around 15–27 °C, bright filtered light, good air circulation, and moderate to high humidity.
Description and notes: This compact miniature orchid produces short pseudobulbs, each with a single fleshy, pencil-shaped leaf. Small inflorescences usually bear one to three star-shaped white flowers with an intensely purple to magenta lip. Grow it mounted on cork or wood and water regularly during active growth. Keep it somewhat cooler and drier in winter, but do not let the leaves shrivel.
