Description

Lepanthes volador x L. mariposa OP in vitro

Name: Lepanthes volador × Lepanthes mariposa
Etymology: volador = flying / the flyer (Spanish, presumably referring to the dynamic, animal-like, flying flower form); mariposa = butterfly (referring to the delicate, butterfly-like flower structure).
Origin / Distribution: Cultivar. The parent species originate from the neotropical cloud forests of Latin America.
Location / Habitat: Epiphytic. After deflasking, requires cool to temperate conditions, partial shade (no direct sunlight), a consistently high humidity of 75–85%, and continuous, gentle air circulation.
Description & Notes: This exclusive hybrid brings together two exceptionally dynamic forms from the subtribe Pleurothallidinae. Lepanthes volador contributes its unique, almost floating flower morphology, while Lepanthes mariposa provides a delicate, intensely colored butterfly structure. The resulting hybrid promises extremely delicate, intensely colored miniature flowers that are perfectly suited for cultivation in display cases, terrariums, or specialized bottle gardens.

In vitro culture: You will receive a bottle with 4 young plants. The plants are usually already large enough to be deflasked. After opening, remove the nutrient medium from the very fine roots particularly carefully with lukewarm water, and place the young plants on moist sphagnum or in a very fine, airy, and slightly moisture-retaining substrate. During the first few weeks, we recommend very high humidity, cool to intermediate conditions, protected light, and gentle, continuous air movement. Keep consistently slightly moist and avoid complete drying out.
