Name: Lepanthes volador (f. orange × f. xanthina)
Etymology: volador = flying / the flyer (Spanish; refers to the dynamic, almost hovering flower structure); orange = refers to the orange-flowered form; xanthina = yellow/yellowish (from the Greek xanthos), refers to the yellow-flowered form.
Origin / Distribution: Cultivar / selected cross. The parent species Lepanthes volador is native to the humid montane cloud forests of Ecuador.
Growing conditions / Habitat: Epiphytic. After deflasking, requires cool to intermediate conditions, shaded to partially shaded light (no direct sun), consistently high humidity of 75–85%, and gentle, continuous air circulation.
Description & Notes: This deliberate cross combines two outstanding color forms of the popular miniature orchid Lepanthes volador. The parent species is distinguished by its graceful growth habit and characteristic, almost freely hovering flowers. Crossing the orange-flowered form with the yellow-flowered form (xanthina) makes this seedling offspring likely to display a fascinating spectrum of warm, vivid hues ranging from intense orange and yellow-orange to pure yellow. Since this selection was open-pollinated (OP / open pollinated), appealing variations among siblings may occur. An excellent choice for long-term cultivation in display cases, terrariums, or bottle gardens.
In vitro culture: You will receive a flask containing 4 young plants. The plants are generally already large enough to be deflasked. After opening, carefully remove the growing medium from the very fine roots using lukewarm water, then place the young plants on moist sphagnum or in a very fine, airy substrate that retains a little moisture. For the first few weeks, we recommend very high humidity, cool to intermediate conditions, sheltered light, and gentle, continuous air movement. Keep consistently slightly moist and avoid allowing the plants to dry out completely.
