Name: Lepanthes tentaculata × Lepanthes mariposa
Etymology: tentaculata = with feelers/tentacles — refers to the thread-like appendages of the flower; mariposa = butterfly — indicates the delicate, butterfly-like shape of the flower.
Origin / Distribution: Cultivar. The parent species originate from the neotropical cloud forests
Location / Habitat: Epiphytic. After deflasking, requires cool to temperate conditions, partial shade (no direct sunlight), a consistently high humidity of 75–85%, and continuous, gentle air circulation.
Description & Notes: This exclusive hybrid combines two spectacular miniature orchids of the subtribe Pleurothallidinae. Lepanthes tentaculata passes on its characteristic dark-patterned, attractively net-veined leaves, while Lepanthes mariposa provides an exceptionally delicate, butterfly-like flower structure. The resulting hybrids promise beautiful, high-contrast leaves and intensely colored flowers with fine appendages.
In vitro culture: You will receive a flask containing 4 young plants. The plants are usually already large enough to be deflasked. After opening, remove the nutrient medium particularly carefully from the very fine roots using lukewarm water, and place the young plants on moist sphagnum moss or in a very fine, airy, and slightly moisture-retaining substrate. During the first few weeks, we recommend very high humidity, cool to intermediate conditions, protected light, and gentle, continuous air movement. Keep consistently slightly moist and avoid complete drying out.
