Description

Lepanthes tentaculata × L. helicocephala, open-pollinated, in vitro

Name: Lepanthes tentaculata × Lepanthes helicocephala
Etymology: tentaculata = bearing antennae/tentacles (Latin, referring to the thread-like appendages of the floral organs); helicocephala = coiled head or snail head (from the Greek helix = coil/snail and kephale = head, alluding to the unusually shaped floral structure).
Origin / Distribution: Cultivar. The parent species involved originate from the humid montane cloud forests of South America (including Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil).
Growing Conditions / Habitat: Epiphytic. After deflasking, requires cool to intermediate conditions, shaded to partially shaded light (no direct sun), consistently high humidity of 75–85%, and continuous, gentle air circulation.
Description & Notes: This exceptional hybrid combines two botanically fascinating species of the genus. Lepanthes tentaculata contributes its characteristic, tentacle-like elongated floral structures and delicate petals, while Lepanthes helicocephala adds remarkable, almost sculptural floral morphology and compact growth habits. Seedlings can be expected to develop into extremely delicate miniature orchids with complex, multicolored flowers that stand out above all for their unusual shapes. Open pollination (OP / open pollinated) may result in appealing sibling variations in details of the flower form. An excellent candidate for growing in display cases, terrariums, or bottle gardens.

In-vitro Culture: You will receive a flask containing 4 young plants. The plants are generally already large enough to be deflasked. After opening, carefully remove the growing medium from the very fine roots using lukewarm water, then place the young plants on moist sphagnum or in a very fine, airy substrate that retains a little moisture. For the first few weeks, we recommend very high humidity, cool to intermediate conditions, sheltered light, and gentle, continuous air movement. Keep consistently slightly moist and avoid allowing it to dry out completely.
