Name: Lepanthes scalaris Luer
Etymology: The genus name Lepanthes is derived from the Greek lepis ("scale") and anthos ("flower"). The epithet scalaris means "ladder-shaped" and refers to the distinctive growth habit of the shoots.
First description: The species was described in 1983 by Carlyle A. Luer.
Origin / Habitat: Southern Colombia and northern Ecuador, in cloud forests at approximately 3,200–3,400 m. It grows epiphytically and prefers cool conditions.
Description & Cultivation: A miniature orchid with slender, upright shoots, each bearing a single leathery leaf. A new shoot can emerge from the tip of an older shoot; the inflorescence often extends well beyond the leaf and bears numerous flowers sequentially. The flowers measure approximately 5 mm. We cultivate it in shade to bright indirect light, with high humidity, good air circulation, and consistent moisture. We keep it cool, at approximately 8–16 °C.
