Description

Lepanthes maxonii

Name: Lepanthes maxonii Schltr.

Etymology: The genus name Lepanthes is derived from the Greek lepis ("scale") and anthos ("flower"). The epithet maxonii honors the collector William R. Maxon.

Original description: The species was described by Rudolf Schlechter in 1913.

Origin / Habitat: Panama, in moist mountain and cloud forests at approximately 2000–2300 m. It grows epiphytically and prefers cool to cold conditions.

Description & Notes: Small epiphytic Lepanthes with single upright leaves and a long, densely packed inflorescence on which numerous flowers appear in succession. The flowers reach about 3 cm. We cultivate them in shady to bright indirect light, with high humidity, good air circulation, and consistent moisture. We keep them cool to cold, at about 9–15 °C.
