Name: Lepanthes matamorosii yellow × Lepanthes jimenezii
Etymology: matamorosii = named in honor of the Costa Rican botanist and orchid collector Francisco Matamoros (the variety name 'Yellow' refers to a rare yellow color form of the flowers); jimenezii = named in honor of the Costa Rican botanist and plant hunter Otón Jiménez Luthmer.
Origin / Distribution: Cultivar. The parent species are native to the cool, humid cloud forests of Costa Rica.
Location / Habitat: Epiphytic. After deflasking, it requires cool to intermediate conditions, shady to semi-shady light levels (no direct sun), a constantly high humidity of 75–85%, as well as continuous, gentle air circulation.
Description & Notes: This highly interesting miniature hybrid combines two fascinating Pleurothallidinae species endemic to Costa Rica. Lepanthes matamorosii 'Yellow' contributes its characteristically shaped flowers, which are bright yellow in this selection, while Lepanthes jimenezii provides a particularly delicate floral structure and a compact growth habit. The offspring promise extremely elegant, bright yellow to orange-shaded miniature flowers with fine morphological details. An excellent addition for enthusiasts of neotropical miniature orchids, which, once acclimated, is ideally suited for cultivation in a terrarium, display case, or bottle garden.
In-vitro culture: You will receive a flask with 4 young plants. The plants are generally large enough to be deflasked. After opening, carefully remove the nutrient medium from the very fine roots with lukewarm water and place the young plants on damp sphagnum or in a very fine, airy, and slightly moisture-retaining substrate. During the first few weeks, we recommend very high humidity, cool to intermediate conditions, shady to bright filtered light, and gentle air movement. Keep consistently slightly damp and avoid complete drying out.
