Name: Lepanthes delhierroi, Luer & Hirtz 1993
Etymology: delhierroi = Del Hierro, Ecuadorian discoverer of the species in the 20th century
Origin: Ecuador
Habitat: Epiphytic on moss-covered trunks in cloud forests at elevations of 1400-2400m.
Notes: Lepanthes delhierroi can bear a few flowers, opening one after another, about 1cm in size, which stand clearly above the foliage.
In cultivation, this sensitive highland rarity requires consistently cool to, at most, intermediate conditions and is sensitive to stagnant summer heat. As the fine roots and the plant have no storage organs, the substrate must never dry out, but must also not remain waterlogged and stagnant. Thanks to its compact size, the species is ideally suited to cultivation in specialized terrariums and fog enclosures. It is best grown mounted on cork with a permanently moist layer of Sphagnum moss. Very high humidity of over 80% and continuous, gentle air circulation are essential to prevent fungal diseases.
In vitro culture: You will receive a flask containing 4 young plants. The plants are generally already large enough to be removed from the flask. After opening, very carefully remove the nutrient medium from the fine roots using lukewarm water and place the young plants on moist Sphagnum or in a very fine, airy substrate. For the first few weeks, we recommend very high humidity, cool to intermediate temperatures, sheltered light, and gentle, continuous air movement. Keep the young plants consistently slightly moist and never allow them to dry out completely.
