Description

Lepanthes caloura

Name: Lepanthes caloura Luer & Hirtz

Etymology: caloura refers to the characteristic flower shape; the exact derivation of the name is not explained in the available sources.

First description: Carlyle A. Luer and André Hirtz described the species in 1987.

Origin / Habitat: Southeastern Ecuador, particularly in humid montane and cloud forests at elevations of approximately 1300–1900 m. It grows epiphytically.

Description & Notes: A miniature orchid with single leaves and delicate, sequentially emerging flowers measuring about 5 mm. It blooms mainly in winter and spring. In our collection, it grows in shade to partial shade, with high humidity and good air circulation. We grow it in cool to intermediate conditions, at approximately 9–22 °C.
