Name: Laelia purpurata ('russelliana' × 'concolor')
Parents: Laelia purpurata 'russelliana' × Laelia purpurata 'concolor'
Etymology: The genus name Laelia derives from a name from ancient Rome. The Latin specific epithet purpurata means “purple-colored” and refers to the often vividly colored lip. The names 'russelliana' and 'concolor' identify the color types or cultivated forms used in this cross.
Origin/Distribution: The species Laelia purpurata is native to Brazil’s Atlantic coastal forest.
Location/Habitat: Laelia purpurata grows epiphytically in bright, airy forest habitats. We recommend very bright, filtered light, good air movement, and moderate to high humidity. Temperate to warm-temperate conditions of approximately 16–28 °C during the day and 11–20 °C at night are favorable. Water regularly during active growth; once the new pseudobulbs have matured, keep the plant somewhat drier.
Description and Notes: In this intraspecific cross, two color types of the same species were combined. The seedlings may therefore vary in color intensity and pattern. Typical features include robust pseudobulbs, leathery leaves, and large, elegant flowers. We grow the plants in a coarse, very airy orchid mix and water regularly during growth, using water that is as soft as possible. Once the new growths have matured, we reduce watering somewhat without inducing a pronounced dry rest.
