Name: Kefersteinia pulchella Schltr.
Etymology: The genus name Kefersteinia commemorates the German orchid enthusiast Adolf Keferstein; the Latin epithet pulchella means “pretty” or “dainty.”
First description: Rudolf Schlechter, 1929.
Origin/Distribution: Bolivia.
Habitat: Epiphytic in humid mountain forests, often in shady, moss-rich locations at around 1,100 m. The species prefers high humidity, gentle air movement, and cool to intermediate temperatures of approximately 14–24 °C.
Description and notes: Kefersteinia pulchella grows without pseudobulbs and produces soft, lanceolate leaves in compact fans. Its individual flowers, about 4 cm across, appear on short stems at the base of the plant and have a strikingly textured and patterned lip. Since it lacks storage organs, we keep the fine, airy substrate evenly slightly moist and do not let it dry out completely. Bright, filtered light, low-calcium water, and humidity of about 70–80% promote healthy growth.
