Description

Hoya Mathilde Splash

Name: Hoya ‘Mathilde Splash’
Etymology: The genus name Hoya was given by Robert Brown in honor of the English gardener Thomas Hoy (c. 1750–1822). The name ‘Mathilde’ refers to the hybrid Hoya ‘Mathilde’, while ‘Splash’ describes the additional silvery-white speckling of the leaves.
Hybrid formula: Hoya carnosa × Hoya serpen
First description: ‘Hoya’ ‘Mathilde Splash’ is a horticultural selection of the ‘Mathilde’ hybrid and has no botanical first description as a distinct species. The hybrid Hoya ‘Mathilde’ originated from Hoya carnosa × Hoya serpens.
Origin / Distribution: Cultivated hybrid. It does not occur as a natural population. The parent species originate from tropical regions of Asia.
Location / Habitat: As a cultivated hybrid, ‘Mathilde Splash’ has no natural habitat. It prefers warm, bright, and airy conditions with high humidity. Direct, intense midday sun should be avoided.
Description & Notes: Hoya ‘Mathilde Splash’ is a compactly growing, climbing to trailing Hoya with small, rounded-oval, fleshy leaves. The green leaf surface is covered with numerous silvery-white speckles and spots, creating a lively “Splash” pattern. The spherical inflorescences consist of small, waxy flowers, which usually appear white to pale pink and have a darker corona in the center.

In cultivation, it grows particularly well in a loose, coarse substrate with very good drainage. Between waterings, the top layer of the substrate should dry out slightly. Bright, indirect light promotes compact growth and supports flower formation. Temperatures between 18 and 28 °C and good air circulation create favorable conditions for healthy development.
