Description

Hoya carnosa var. compacta 'Mauna Loa'

Name: Hoya carnosa ‘Compacta’ ‘Mauna Loa’
Etymology: The genus name Hoya was given by Robert Brown in honor of the English gardener Thomas Hoy (c. 1750–1822). The specific epithet carnosa comes from the Latin carnosus ("fleshy") and describes the thick, fleshy leaves. ‘Compacta’ refers to the characteristically twisted, compact growth, while ‘Mauna Loa’ is the designation of this horticultural form.
First description: ‘Hoya carnosa’ ‘Compacta’ ‘Mauna Loa’ is a horticultural cultivar and has no independent botanical first description. The species Hoya carnosa was scientifically described by Robert Brown in 1810.
Origin / Distribution: Cultivar. The wild species Hoya carnosa is distributed in parts of East and Southeast Asia. ‘Mauna Loa’ does not occur as a natural population.
Location / Habitat: The cultivar has no natural habitat. Like the wild species, it prefers warm, humid conditions with bright, indirect light. An airy environment and good drainage are particularly important.
Description & Notes: Hoya carnosa ‘Compacta’ ‘Mauna Loa’ is a slow-growing, evergreen hoya with characteristically twisted and curled, fleshy leaves. The shoots initially grow upright and later develop into a trailing or climbing habit. The unusually crinkled leaves lie close to the shoots and give the plant a compact, sculptural appearance. Under suitable conditions, it forms spherical inflorescences with waxy, mostly pink to whitish flowers.

In cultivation, it requires a bright location without intense midday sun and a coarse, very well-drained substrate. The substrate should dry out slightly between waterings. Temperatures between 18 and 28 °C and good air circulation promote healthy growth. The crinkled leaves store water and make the plant comparatively tolerant of short dry periods.
