Name: Encyclia dichroma (Lindl.) Schltr.
Synonyms: Epidendrum dichromum Lindl.
Etymology: The genus name Encyclia refers to the lateral lobes of the lip that encircle the column; dichroma means “two-colored” and refers to the contrasting flower coloration.
First description: John Lindley described the species in 1843 as Epidendrum dichromum; the combination Encyclia dichroma was published by Rudolf Schlechter in 1914.
Origin/Distribution: Northeastern Brazil.
Location/Habitat: We grow this species in warm to intermediate conditions at around 17–29 °C, in very bright light, with good air movement and moderate to high humidity. The potting medium must drain very well.
Description and notes: The species produces robust pseudobulbs with leathery leaves and upright inflorescences bearing flowers with contrasting coloration. During active growth, we water regularly; the airy potting medium may dry out slightly between waterings. After the pseudobulbs have matured, we reduce watering somewhat.
