Name: Encyclia cordigera (Kunth) Dressler
Etymology: The genus name Encyclia refers to the lip that encloses the column; cordigera means “heart-bearing” and refers to the distinctive lip.
Origin/Distribution: The species is found in tropical America.
Location/Habitat: We grow Encyclia cordigera in warm to intermediate conditions at around 17–28 °C, in very bright conditions, with medium to high humidity and excellent air circulation. During growth, we water thoroughly and then allow the coarse, airy potting medium to dry out slightly.
Description and Notes: This robust epiphytic species produces pseudobulbs and long, upright inflorescences. The large, often fragrant flowers usually have brown to olive sepals and petals, as well as a contrasting pink to purple lip. Once the pseudobulbs have matured, we water slightly more sparingly.
