Name: Dracula simia (Luer) Luer
Synonyms: Masdevallia simia Luer
Etymology: The genus name Dracula translates as "little dragon"; simia means "monkey" and refers to the striking center of the flower, which resembles a monkey's face.
Origin/Distribution: This species originates from Ecuador and Peru.
Location/Habitat: We cultivate Dracula simia in cool to intermediate conditions at approximately 12–21 °C, with very high humidity, bright filtered light, and continuous gentle air movement. We keep the fine, airy substrate consistently moist.
Description and Notes: The distinctive flowers possess long sepal tips and a contrasting center, which gives the species its well-known "monkey face" appearance. The inflorescences grow laterally to pendulously; therefore, airy basket cultivation is particularly suitable. We avoid prolonged heat and letting the plant dry out completely.
