Name: Dracula polyphemus (Luer) Luer
Synonyms: Masdevallia polyphemus Luer
Etymology: The genus name Dracula translates roughly to "little dragon"; polyphemus refers to Polyphemus, the Cyclops from Greek mythology.
Origin/Distribution: The species originates from Ecuador.
Location/Habitat: We cultivate Dracula polyphemus in cool to intermediate conditions at approximately 12–21 °C, with very high humidity, bright filtered light, and gentle, continuous air movement. The fine, airy substrate should remain evenly moist.
Description and Notes: The species can produce very large, impressive flowers with long, extended sepal tips. The inflorescences grow horizontally to pendulous and can produce multiple flowers in succession. A well-draining basket culture is therefore particularly suitable.
