Description

Dendrobium pseudoglomeratum OP in vitro

Name: Dendrobium pseudoglomeratum T.M.Reeve & J.J.Wood

Etymology: pseudoglomeratum = false-glomeratum / similar to Dendrobium glomeratum. Formed from the Greek pseudo- (false, deceptive) and the species name glomeratum (from Latin glomeratus = clustered/tightly bunched), which alludes to its close relationship and visual similarity to Dendrobium glomeratum.

First described: in 1982 by T.M. Reeve and Jeffrey J. Wood.

Origin / distribution: Endemic to the island of New Guinea (Papua New Guinea and West Papua).

Location / Habitat: Epiphytic, growing in humid lowland swamp forests and montane rain and cloud forests at elevations from sea level to about 1,800 (occasionally 2,000) meters. After deflasking, the young plants prefer intermediate to warm-intermediate conditions, a bright but shaded to partially shaded location (no direct, intense sunlight), high humidity of 75–85%, and steady, gentle air circulation.

Description & notes: Dendrobium pseudoglomeratum belongs to section Pedilonum and is known for its exceptionally spectacular, densely packed inflorescences. The vivid flowers display a fascinating contrast of colors: their sepals and petals glow in an intense pink to magenta hue, while the tubular lip stands out in a striking, bright orange. The flowers usually appear in clustered racemes on mature or already leafless pseudobulbs. Owing to its vigorous growth and exceptional color intensity, this species is considered a gem for enthusiasts of East Asian orchids and is ideal for continued cultivation in a terrarium, display case, or greenhouse.

Cultivation note for sale (Orchipack): The seedlings are in a sterile, sealed glass vessel on an agar-based medium. The system is completely self-sustaining as long as the vessel remains sealed. Once the plants have reached an adequate size, carefully remove them, rinse the agar residue thoroughly with lukewarm water, and prick out the seedlings into fine-grade pine bark or live sphagnum moss (preferably in a closed terrarium).

In-vitro culture: You will receive a flask containing 4 seedlings. The plants are generally already large enough to be deflasked. After opening, carefully remove all the medium from the fine roots with lukewarm water and plant the seedlings in fine, airy bark mixed with a little fine-fiber sphagnum. During the first few weeks, we recommend very high humidity, gentle air movement, intermediate-to-cool conditions, and bright but protected light. Keep the substrate evenly slightly moist, then gradually acclimate the plants to normal growing conditions.
