Name: Dendrobium harveyanum Rchb.f.
Synonyms: Callista harveyana.
Etymology: harveyanum honors William Henry Harvey.
First described: Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach described the species in 1883.
Origin / Habitat: From southern China to Indochina, particularly Yunnan, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. It grows epiphytically in subtropical forests.
Description & Notes: The slender pseudobulbs bear striking yellow flowers with a strongly fringed lip. We grow it in a bright spot with good air movement and regular moisture during active growth. We cultivate it in intermediate conditions, at about 15–25 °C. After the canes have matured, a distinctly cooler and drier rest period is important; during this time, provide only enough moisture to prevent the pseudobulbs from shriveling excessively.
In vitro culture: You will receive a flask containing 4 young plants. The plants are generally already large enough to be deflasked. After carefully removing the growing medium, we pot them in very fine, airy bark with a little moisture-retentive material and initially keep them evenly and slightly moist. For the first few weeks, we recommend high humidity, around 18–24 °C, good air movement, and bright, sheltered light; a pronounced dry rest period should be introduced only once the young plants are well established and growing vigorously.
